Ban Ki-moon has urged Britain to stop funding fossil fuel projects overseas, in what he said would mark a test of Theresa May’s commitment to act on climate change. The former UN secretary general said he was deeply concerned that the UK’s export credit agency had provided billions of pounds in recent years to support businesses involved in oil and gas schemes around the world. “These figures and policies are hard to reconcile with the UK’s commitments under the Paris agreement,” said Ban, referring to the international climate deal he forged in 2015 as UN chief. “The time has come for the UK to change course, in the interests of the whole world,” he wrote in a comment piece for the Guardian. He said the funding was at odds with warning given by Mark Carney, the Bank of England governor, who has said climate change will lead to financial crises. Beijing challenged President Donald Trump's basis for the ongoing trade war between China and the U.S., saying that America's trade deficit is actually 37 percent of the figure claimed by Washington. U.S. government figures indicate that the trade deficit was nearly $419 billion in 2018. However, China's Ministry of Commerce published a statement Thursday claiming that, when accounting for services and processing trade, the gap between the two countries is actually $153 billion. While questioning the basis for the trade war, China also signaled that it would not compromise key elements of its economic operations. "There are principles in cooperation and there is a bottom line in talks," Gao Feng, a spokesman for the Commerce Ministry, said. "China will never give in on major issues of principle." Edward Gerwin, senior fellow at the Progressive Policy Institute, said that the difference in numbers likely indicated that the Chinese government was using an another, nontraditional … [Read more...] about ‘China will Never Give in on Major Issues of Principle’: Beijing Challenges Trump’s Basis for Trade War
Why it matters: US companies have previously warned of the economic consequences of halting trade with companies like Huawei, who is one of their biggest clients for electronic components and software services. In a positive turn of events, it looks like the US will now allow several of these companies to continue their business with Huawei, which should bring some stability back to the tech industry. Earlier this month, news broke that hundreds of companies have sent requests to US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross to allow them to restart their relationships with Huawei, who said that the Trump administration was considering the idea of honoring "quite a few" of them. The Commerce Department has officially started issuing licenses again for some of these companies to do business with Huawei. The Chinese giant has been one of the biggest buyers of hardware and software, having spent $11 billion in 2018 before the trade ban came into effect. Huawei has had to release its latest … [Read more...] about The US says it’s starting to process applications for licenses to sell tech to Huawei
