December 11, 2019 by

The XIV Triennial National Conference of Indian Women Scientist’s Association (IWSA) was inaugurated at National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Tarnaka, on Wednesday. Rohini M Godbole, professor, Centre for High Energy Physics, Indian Institute of Science, was the chief guest. The three-day-long national conference is held with the theme ‘Women led Science, Technology and Innovation’.Delivering keynote address at the inauguration, Dr. Godbole said that the overall intellectual potential of human beings in the world can be put to use at optimal level only when the number of women in science increases. “Diversity can be good for science, as for any creative activity. Encourage girl children to participate in various science competitions,” she said, emphasising the need to address gender imbalance in science right from the early age of girl children. March 12, 2019 by

Font size:A-|A+2 Slovakia’s Defence Ministry, led by the nominees of the Slovak National Party (SNS), ended the negotiations over the United States' € $ 105 million investment. The ministry explained that the offer “interferes with the property rights and sovereignty of Slovakia”, the public-service broadcaster RTVS reported. The investment was supposed to be provided as part of the European Deterrence Initiative. The plan was to use the money to modernise the military airports in Kuchyňa (Bratislava Region) and Sliač (Banská Bystrica Region).“The ministry will no longer participate in the negotiations over the financial aid within the Defense Cooperation Agreement with the United States,” its spokesperson Danka Capáková said, as quoted by the SITA newswire. “Its adoption would threaten the sovereignty of Slovakia.”What was the problem? She went on to say that the sovereignty of Slovakia may be “threatened or … [Read more...] about The Defence Ministry ends talks on US investment in airports

The Mummy returns – and this time he’s brought his boomerang! Tutankhamun’s treasures come back to the UK for the last time before going on permanent display in Egypt

October 6, 2019 by

A never-before-seen boomerang is among artefacts from the tomb of Tutankhamun being brought to the UK When treasures from Tutankhamun’s tomb came to the UK half a century ago, 1.7 million people queued for hours to see them at the British Museum.  Next month, the Boy King returns and the crowds are again expected to be vast. Fittingly for a touring exhibition that will return to a permanent display at the vast new Grand Egyptian Museum, near the pyramids of Giza, the 150 artefacts – many never seen before – include a boomerang. The ten-city show, which last month became the most-visited exhibition in French history, opens at the Saatchi Gallery in London on November 2. Treasures Of The Golden Pharaoh will feature the largest number of Tutankhamun artefacts to leave Egypt, including rings and bracelets found in the mummy’s linen sheets by Howard Carter in 1922. The golden death mask that formed the centrepiece of the British Museum’s famous exhibition … [Read more...] about The Mummy returns – and this time he’s brought his boomerang! Rival Scientists Cast Doubt Upon Recent Discovery About Invincible Animals

December 4, 2015 by

Last Monday, a team from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill published the first ever genome of a tardigrade—a group of endearing microscopic animals with a reputation for being nigh-invincible. Astonishingly, as we reported last week, they found that around 6,600 of the animal’s genes—a full sixth of its genome—had jumped in from bacteria and other foreign sources. And perhaps, they speculated, this massive horizontal gene transfer (HGT) explained the tardigrade’s famed ability to withstand extreme conditions.Just one week later, those claims are starting to unravel. A second team from the University of Edinburgh had also been sequencing the genome of the same species of tardigrade, ordered from the same supplier. And their results, released on Tuesday as a preprint paper, are totally different. They found very few horizontally transferred genes—as few as 36, and just 500 at the very most. They concluded that their rivals had sequenced … [Read more...] about Rival Scientists Cast Doubt Upon Recent Discovery About Invincible Animals

Lord Browne: UK must ignore US and make its own decision on tech security

December 10, 2019 by

Lord Browne of Madingley, the chairman of Huawei UK and former boss of BP, has urged the UK not to be influenced by the US on Chinese telecoms security threats.  Lord Browne warned of the “science and engineering war between the US and China” and a “strong technological divide”.  “I hope the UK makes its own determination,” he said, “when it is a matter of security each government has to make its own decision.” Lord Browne's remarks come as the UK faces fierce US lobbying to ban Huawei equipment from its new 5G mobile network. On Thursday at a meeting of Nato leaders, Boris Johnson said a “key criterion” of allowing Huawei to build parts of the UK network was whether it would impact intelligence... … [Read more...] about Lord Browne: UK must ignore US and make its own decision on tech security
