(CNN)President Donald Trump said Sunday the US would "devastate Turkey economically" if the NATO-allied country attacks Kurds in the region. "Starting the long overdue pullout from Syria while hitting the little remaining ISIS territorial caliphate hard, and from many directions. Will attack again from existing nearby base if it reforms," the President tweeted on Sunday. He added, "Will devastate Turkey economically if they hit Kurds," but followed up in a second tweet, "Likewise, do not want the Kurds to provoke Turkey." Days after US troops were withdrawn from the Turkey - Syrian border, Turkey have launched a military operation named “Operation Peace Spring” and began ground and air assaults in north-eastern Syria. The operation according to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is to “prevent the creation of a terror corridor across our southern border. “[We] will neutralise terror threats against Turkey and lead to the establishment of a safe zone, facilitating the return of Syrian refugees to their homes. “We will preserve Syria’s territorial integrity and liberate local communities from terrorists.” The so-called safe zone’s target area is a 20-mile deep area running 300 miles along the Syrian side of the border. The aim now for Turkey is to push back members of the biggest Kurdish militia, the People’s Protection Units (YPG). Vice President Mike Pence says he’s being dispatched to the Middle East by President Donald Trump as U.S. troops pull out of northeast Syria and Turkish forces invade. Pence says Trump spoke with Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan earlier Monday and called for an immediate end to Turkey’s moves against the Kurds in Syria. “President Trump communicated to him very clearly that the United States of American wants Turkey to stop the invasion, implement an immediate ceasefire and to begin to negotiate with Kurdish forces in Syria to bring an end to the violence,” Pence said. Pence says the president is “very concerned about instability in the region” and is denying that Trump gave Turkey the green light to launch the invasion when he announced a troop pullout. Trump has slapped new sanctions on Turkey to pressure the country to halt an invasion that has opened the door to a resurgence of the Islamic State group. “I am fully prepared to swiftly … [Read more...] about Pence Heads to Mideast as Turkey Attacks Kurds
WASHINGTON — For nine months, the Pentagon played down the presence of its 1,000 troops in Syria, hoping that President Trump would not focus on the extent to which the American military was continuing to fight the Islamic State despite his order in December to pull out. On Sunday, the president appeared to say he had had enough. Now, for the second time in less than a year, the Defense Department, the State Department, Congress and staff across the national security establishment are scrambling to respond to the words of a president who views Syria and the fight against ISIS as a battle largely won and done for American troops. On Monday, after a White House announcement the night before that Mr. Trump was moving American troops out of the way of a threatened Turkish incursion into Syria, Defense Department officials were struggling to put their already piecemeal Syria military strategy back together again. It will not be easy. Caught between furious Kurdish allies who see Mr. … [Read more...] about Caught Between Trump, Turkey and Kurds, Pentagon Struggles to Piece Together Syria Strategy
